Tubac, Arizona
Tubac, Arizona

WHERE ART AND HISTORY MEET!

As Arizona’s first European settlement, the village of Tubac, Arizona has seen its share of history and change. First settled in 1752 when Spanish soldiers built a presidio here, five flags have flown over the community. Tubac has been home to Native American peoples, Spanish Colonialists, has been part of the New Mexico Territory, a Mexican community and an Arizona Territory.

Tubac Presidio State Historic ParkToday, art and history are juxtaposed amid the stunning beauty in Santa Cruz County. After years of conflict over the land, the town had virtually vanished. In the 1940s, the late painter Dale Nichols visualized an art colony and started a school in 1948. Fascinated with the seclusion and simplicity in the desert landscapes, Nichols painted in a Tubac studio for six years.

Tubac has grown and changed significantly since 1948, and notable artists such as (the late)Hal Empie, Hugh Cabot, Nicholas Wilson and Michael Gibbons have made Tubac their home. Dozens of painters, potters & sculptors are among the many artists who make their home in the village and they produce works in every medium. Works by internationally known artists fill the galleries and bring national acclaim to the area.

EVENTS IN TUBAC

Each year a host of colorful festivals and events bring thousands of visitors to Tubac. The first of these is the annual Tubac Festival of the Arts. Here, craftpersons and artists from around the country descend on Tubac for a celebration of the diversity of the arts. For more than 40 years the festival has drawn visitors to the village.

Tubac Festival of the Arts

March brings the annual Tubac Art Walk, an artistic tour through the art galleries and working studios of Tubac. Some of the artists demonstrate their craft, creating works from a dab of paint or a pile of clay.

Fall’s Anza Days commemorates the historic travels of Juan Bautista de Anza, the area’s leader in the 1700s who led an expedition to find an overland route to the San Francisco Bay area. Each year, participants dress in period costume and re-create the start of Anza’s 1,200-mile journey. A local scholar leads the reenactment on horseback. Beginning at nearby Tumacacori National Historic Park, trekkers hike four and a half miles along the Santa Cruz River to the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Games for children and a re-created Spanish Colonial village are among the highlights of the weekend.

Year-round at the park, a museum, underground archaeology displays and living history demonstrations invite the public to learn about Tubac’s rich tapestry of history. The award-winning group, Los Tubaqueños perform on weekends, giving visitors a sense of what life was like in the days as a rustic Spanish settlement. It was at the presidio that conflicts of the Old West raged and soldiers protected the area.

In the fall, Tubac: An Art Experience brings art up close and personal to the village. During this November event, artists create works right before visitors’ eyes throughout the weekend that celebrates the artistic process. Local musicians entertain guests while artists provide demonstrations of their works that capture their imagination.

Luminaria NightsAnd finally, no season of Tubac events would be complete without the annual festival of lights known as Fiesta Navidad/Luminaria Nights. For two evenings each December, the shops in Tubac open their doors after hours as the town is candlelit with festive luminarias.

Elvira's Restaurant
Long time Nogales Mexico's favorite restaurant comes north! Fine Mexican Dining in beautiful new location at La Entrada de Tubac. By Kathy Engle, Special to the Santa Cruz Valley Sun Published Monday, November 2, 2009 10:24 AM CST The decor is much more dazzling, the menu has been pared down, the prices are slightly higher. And gone are the complimentary shots of tequila, forbidden by federal law. But the new Elvira’s, at La Entrada de Tubac, 2221 E. Frontage Road, retains all the charm, hospitality and, most importantly, the excellent food that characterized its predecessor, a fixture since 1927 on Avenida Obregon in Nogales, Sonora, just steps away from the international border. Founded by the present owner’s grandmother, from whom the restaurant takes its name, Elvira’s in Mexico was a popular tourist destination for many years, drawing the majority of its customers from the United States. All that changed when a combination of drug cartel violence, a major economic downturn and the imposition of passport requirements for U.S. citizens returning from Mexico caused a major slump in business, said owner Ruben Monroy, Jr., 40. “We saw an 80 percent drop in business. I was used to 50 percent” (because of seasonal fluctuations) “but a lot of people decided they just didn’t need to travel to Mexico anymore. We stayed there until the end of October 2008, when we closed. We still own the property and hope to reopen there again,” Monroy said. Monroy wanted then and still wants to open locations in Tucson and Phoenix, but was convinced by local businessman Todd Harrison to try Tubac. Elvira’s, which opened in late August, has been welcomed enthusiastically by customers coming not only from Tubac and Green Valley, but from Rio Rico, Sonoita, Sahuarita, Tucson, Phoenix and across the border. Monroy, who has degrees in graphic arts and interior design after five years of college in Mexico, selected and purchased all the furnishings and wide-ranging blend of traditional and contemporary Mexican arts and crafts that adorn the bright and lively new location during many trips throughout his native country. He painted the restaurant himself, with a series of electric blue walls, decorated with colorful dots. Elvira’s retains the original colorful, cut-glass goblets from the former restaurant, as well as the Talavera dining service. But the new menu incorporates many more complicated entrees, inspired by cuisine in Mexico City and Guadalajara, Monroy said. After he completed his studies in interior design and graphic arts, Monroy headed off for cooking school in Mexico City to become a chef. His mom, Alice, is a partner in the new Elvira’s and “the supervisor of all recipes.” “She’s a much better cook than I am,” Monroy said, noting that his pursuit to preserve and update the family’s tradition of culinary excellence and gregarious hospitality has been a lifelong passion. Monroy decided on a combined lunch and dinner menu to start, with — about 20 items. The menu offers appetizers, priced from $7.95 to $9.95, including fried potato and cheese tacos, sauteed with garlic and chiles, guacamole, and melted cheese served with tortillas. Entrees range from $8.95 for green chile enchiladas to $22.95 for Salmon Janitzio, sauteed with onions garlic and chiles. Also on the menu is chile poblano stuffed with squash blossom, roasted corn and cheese, served on a bed of bean chipotle sauce, and quesadillas poblanas, cheese-filled turnovers with nopalitos, poblano chiles, jalapenos and roasted corn covered in a tomatillo sauce. The menu also includes grilled filet mignon, rib eye steak, sea bass, shrimp, flounder, grilled tongue and flank steak, with a wide assortment of chiles and sauces. Cheesecake is available for dessert. Elvira’s stocks a full bar, with beer and wine from around the world and margaritas that pack a powerful punch. Shots of tequila are available for 50 cents.
