Amado, Arizona
Nestled in the Santa Cruz River Valley, the picturesque beauty of Amado, Arizona is a paradise for birdwatchers, nature-lovers, and city folk alike. The wide range of ecosystems extend from rugged peaks and pine forests of the Santa Rita Mountains, (named for the patroness of impossible causes), to spring fed canyons, the Sonoran desert and the Santa Cruz River Valley. Amado was once the halfway station along the route that ran from Nogales to Arivaca to Tucson, (the building still stands). Today it's a respite from hectic lives—a look at the past with modern conveniences.
Abundant wildlife and the area supports hundreds of species of birds—dazzling flycatchers, hawks, eagles, waterbirds, and those flying jewels, the Rufous, Costas, Broadbill, Annas, and Black-chinned hummingbirds. For more info, visit our Birding page.
From Amado, the Whipple Observatory in the Santa Rita Mountains is a short drive. Enjoy exhibits on astronomy, natural science, and cultural history. There's an outdoor patio with the Native American petroglyphs discovered on site, and stunning views of the surrounding Santa Rita Mountains. Please call before you go 520.670.5707.
